I’ve probably seen every film and TV version of “Wuthering Heights” (in addition to having read the book several times) . When I ordered this DVD I wondered if it would really add anything to my collection. The acknowledge is yes. The actors manage to pull off the most difficult task for this story: Making the characters sympathetic. Considering that faithful family servant Ellen is the only narrate of normalcy and stability in a nest of emotionally driven and self-centered people, most of them obsessed with revenge, self-destruction, and/or death, that’s a feat. The 1960s black-and-white format seems a bit dilapidated today, but it some ways it adds power. The climate looks icy and wet, the fields glimpse stony, the scarce trees glance blasted. The Wuthering Heights farmhouse looks drafty, dirty, and crudely furnished. Food looks unappetizing; it consists largely of porridge and tea. This cheerless atmosphere is greatly aided by a soundtrack of constantly whistling wind, for both indoor and outdoor scenes. I was literally so icy that I turned the heat up to glance this series.

The material here is radiant. As is most surviving TV shows from this era, the image quality (being a film copy of a video modern) is abominable. Many contemporaneous episodes of Doctor Who, for example, have been restored to near-original condition with the exhaust of VidFire technology, and certainly this note is impartial as meritorious of restoration.

I dock this one star for the packaging. At impartial over two hours, why this couldn’t be fit onto a single DVD is beyond me. No commentary, no subtitles, a hard-to-read menu camouflage. There are interviews with Tim Brooke-Taylor and Michael Palin (of Do Not Adjust Your Area), but these are also included on the “Do Not Adjust…” discs too. Audio exists for all 13 episodes, and it would have been nice to hear some of those lost skits (Cleese and Feldman doing “Bookshop”, for example) .

Would any one want to behold this if the careers of John Cleese and Graham Chapman had ended here? Mostly, I assume not. There are some obedient laughs, and a one hour package could be made that would be tremendously humorous. But having to peek the attractive Aimi MacDonald over and over, feeling as if her inanity and tedium is sucking the oxygen good out of my room, is painful. And like Monty Python, sometimes the boys don’t seem able to distinguish between a droll thought and a humorous sketch. The Nazi game expose host probably sounded wildly laughable, watching it is excruciating.

So, an early incarnation of the Four Yorkshiremen, one-upping each other with tales of their heart-broken childhoods, is possibly funnier than the later MP version. Marty Feldman, playing Michael Palin, Eric Lazy and Woody Allen, is often lustrous, demonstrating a breadth unseen elsewhere. The Chartered Accountant Dance with a previously unknown to me Tim Brooke-Taylor is dazzling. Several clever peruse gags expose up unexpectedly, providing surprising mirth. And a genuinely clever skit of Scotsmen at the ballet is well executed. I liked worthy of this, and don’t regret seeing it. But comedy for the ages? Nooooo, I mediate not. I’ll section my copy with friends, but if it somehow never finds its device relieve, I’ll not be terribly disappointed.

Why Cartoon Network is wasting airtime on shoddy live-action shows wher spacious animation like this can be had from Canada (oh bless you, Huge White North!) baffles me.

Totally baffles me.

From the same people who brought you 6teen.

Ok so I am a cartoon geek, so I may like this stuff too considerable. But I also grew up in the 90s (I’m 21 now), the age of such classics as Cramped Toons, Batman, Rocko, Ren and stimpy, Dexter’s Lab, etc. Don’t forget Looney Tunes repeats.

These were shows that genuinely worked for kids and older audiences, which in the realm of animation is very rare. So while I may be a exiguous biased towards 90s stuff, I haven’t found a demonstrate that was quite up to snuff in this past decade. The rare exception is Total Drama Island.

Initially skeptical (the producers’ forerunning point to 6teen was HOPELESSLY generic), I warmed up to it via Cartoon Network repeats and found it surprisingly accessible and provocative. It basically follows the exploits of various teens competing for cash money while stuck for a god forsaken summer camp in rural Northern Ontario. The basic setup lampoons Survivor with a runt bit of Fright Factor mixed in there. The reality point to spoofery is broken-down to tremendous do. With general genre satire, cartoon slapstick, wacky yet charming character anctics and a cramped bit of gross humor, the writing provides a advantageous variety of gags and jokes.

Then there are the (purposely) sterotypical characters Jock, Hipster, ‘Sista”, Valley Girl (or the Canadian variant) Dork, Goth and Delinquent, unbiased to name a few. There were even some outside of those parameters, (such as off kilter wilderness girl Izzy) . Some fare better than others, but their characters are primitive well and all provoke at least one chuckle from the audience. There is even some development in character relationships, again some better than others. Some genuinely suprising, all of which contributed to the top-notch suspense of seeing who gets voted off the Island.

Also the serial structure made for some nice suspense, it is actually spirited seeing who will pick up voted off if only due to the outrageousness of the stunts, challenges and character antics. (Personal approved character is the conniving, sadistic yet overjoyed and amiacable host Chris who gleefuly hurls the hapless campers into grueling situations fair for kicks!) .

Visuals are decent yet unremarkable, Character designs are fairly nice overall, animation is standard flash. The voices are well cast all around.

For the discerning parent, this display is a tad more raunchy than most standard CN fare. The word “crap” is thrown around a few times, some fart and pee jokes, a few VEERRRY subtle homosexual jokes and there is some blurred nudity as well (Male and female) . Also this being a reality demonstrate spoof, some slightly rude/dark humor comes about with the constant conniving and betrayal (It wouldn’t be a reality note otherwise true? ) . The CN version is toned down a tad from the Canadian version but It’s not Simpson’s level though. Lets say maybe 8 and up.

That don’t bother me none and really is not worse than warrenting a TV-PG rating on TV (G in Canada) . To me it helps with the appeal to older viewers, gives the demonstrate a small edge that was missing from cartoons for a while.

I wanted to give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. It doesn’t QUITE excel, it not a classic by any means either. BUT Total Drama Island earns apt mention for one of the best cartoons of the past decade, a rock solid comedy that is spacious for people (not objective kids) of all ages who like seeing a expedient spoof.

I adore the Shaun the Sheep shorts and the shorts on this DVD are as satisfactory as the previous 2 DVDs. Brand, however, that unlike the first two DVDs, this DVD only has 6 episodes and not 8. I hope that this isn’t a modern trend for these DVDs.

The episodes on this DVD are: Sheep on the Loose, Saturday Night Shaun, Dapper Up, Shaun the Farmer, Camping Chaos, and If You Can’t Stand the Heat. There are also a couple of features: The Mini Making of Shaun (a quickie peek at how an episode is made) and Building a Pig (sort of a demonstration of how to compose a model of one of the pigs using plasticine) .

I wish that the series had been released as a complete spot in the US (as it was elsewhere) .

Young and young-at-heart fans of “Shaun the Sheep” are going to admire the newest adventures of the exiguous sheep and his friends. With six features, each six minutes long, “Sheep on the Loose” is shorter that the others in the series, but it makes up for it in leaps and bounds with the ten additional minutes (not listed) of gargantuan, never before seen bonus features on the making of Shaun.

The adventures include:

* Sheep on the Loose – Shaun tries to hold the farmer from finding out his whole herd has disappeared after hitching a glide to the town fine.

* Saturday Night Shaun – an obsolete report player and disco music are an invitation for party time at the barn.

* Natty Up – It’s cleaning day at the farm. Shaun and the gang have a bustle in with THE most much vacuum cleaner ever.

* Shaun the Farmer – Farmer’s sick and his dog is taking care of him and must delegate. Or so he says. Peruse what happens when Shaun takes over the chores at the farm.

The children all enjoyed it and it was easy to follow along, with gorgeous honorable results.

This was followed by “The Mini Making of Shaun”, a step by step mini-documentary of how the features are made, including the storyboard phase, using computers, the making of the models with a moveable skeleton inside to let them recede, building of the sets, how they catch everything to spy so valid, and the expend of close motion animation.

Don’t be build off by the length. At 48 minutes total, it’s factual up there with other kid DVDs. Moreover, I have newfound respect for this type of labor-intensive clay animation after finding out it took 12 shots, each time inviting the figure a diminutive bit, to net objective 1 second of footage. That’s 4,320 pictures to gather honest one 6 shrimp feature!

My toddler loved the adventures and kept giggling throughout, but didn’t really care for the extras (he’s too young but an older child would probably like this) . Speaking as a 16 year former Canadian male, I can safely say that The Powerpuff Girls was awesome. With its current animation style, immensely likeable characters, deliciously over the top cartoon violence and razor-sharp sense of wit, this demonstrate served as a reminder that Cartoon Network was once tremendous. But unfortunately, to say the series has barely received any generous home video releases is an understatement.

After a few scattered, kid-friendly compilations and a lacklustre first season space, the complete race of the present is at last making it to DVD. Considering that the past home video releases have completely neglected the last three seasons of the present, and that a lovely amount of principal episodes from the other three seasons have also been neglected, it’s enormous to seek Warner Bros. is finally giving all of it to us in one handy package.

According to TVShowsonDVD.com, this place will be comprised of 6 double-sided discs containing all 78 episodes of the note and the previously released Christmas special, “‘Twas the Fight Before Christmas”. It’s worth noting that the final episode, “Examine Me, Feel Me, Gnomey” (essential for being an all-singing episode), has never been broadcast in the States (although it has been broadcast in Canada and the UK), so it will be attractive to have.

If you’re a fan like me, this residence is an sure must-buy. As for those who have never seen the reveal, it’s easy to gain into: unbiased gape past the sugary-sweet femininity and you’ll pick up an incredibly entertaining sense of humour.

UPDATE (01-23-09) : Okay, so I got my copy. Each of the 6 discs represents one season of the display, and considering the sheer amount of material on each double-sided disc, everything is mastered at a delicate high bit rate. Of course, the episodes are all very magnificent looking and sounding, as they’d better be, considering the animation style and age of the materials.

While I haven’t thoroughly looked at the special features, I can dispute you something fans might want to know:

“The Powerpuff Girls Rule!!!”, that completely fresh episode bewitching in Adobe Flash and broadcast in the States the day before this set’s release, IS included here. You need only pop disc 6, side B into your player and contemplate under the extras allotment.

So did this dwelling live up to my expectations? Oh, yeah. Smooth highly recommended, narrowing of classic to clunker ratio in the last two seasons notwithstanding.

So who are the Powerpuff Girls? Bubbles, despite her superpowers, is most easily unnerved and is the most sensitive ‘puff of the bunch.

The double-meanings and creativity of the episodes were a delight and it was something that I ancient to ogle guiltily as a 20-something man. They were downright hilarious, though, so it was hard not to explore. The violence might be a miniature too remarkable for some parents, but my 5-year primitive daughter knows that it’s groundless and plays it up for the humor that it is. She hasn’t gone around the house bashing things up nor has she exhibited any violent tendencies. Aloof, parents be warned and settle based on your acquire lifestyle and viewing choices.

I watched the movie as it aired on tv, and enjoyed it so considerable I rented it a number of times when it released. In the first few minutes of the film, we sight Steve Jobs pacing the floor on a Boston stage (year 1997–shortly after his return to Apple), and above him is the huge image of Bill Gates smiling down (smirking? ) at him, while we hear the tell of Steve Wozniac (the Woz) in the background say, “How did we fetch from there to here? ” And there, dear readers, lies the account of the century.

Kudos for the director, the casting director, and the handsome performances from Hall and Wyle. In this film, we discover the rise of the personal computer from two of most vital players of the era, and along the diagram, we are shown how deeply power and wealth corrupts. Those of us that lived through this period are well acquainted with the first personal computers. Indeed, many of us have heard enough rumors concerning Steve Jobs’ unhurried night tantrums as he walked the halls of his empire, to know that this film depicted both him and Steve Wozniac fairly honestly. As far as the depiction of Bill Gates, there are those that agree and those that disagree. Obviously, artistic license was ragged on both sides. Steve Wozniac mentioned that he was surprised how accurately the movie portrayed the personalities, but indicated they got many of the dates screwed up (check his web status, he has many tantalizing comments concerning the movie) .

As the title aptly suggests, both Steve and Bill gained their initial fame not unprejudiced from their have creative genius (although both are considered geniuses), but as great from “borrowing” — Jobs from Xerox PARC, and Gates from Apple Computer. And while that is the central theme of the movie, it also points out the fantastic short-sightedness of top corporate executives–HP (unfairly in reality) and IBM for not realizing the potential of the personal computer and software for the masses, and Xerox for not notion what they themselves had developed. One of the best lines comes from an HP exec talking to Steve Wozniac (the creator of the Apple computer) … “Why would the average person ever want a computer? ” (I’m paraphrasing here–and I contemplate in reality, it was IBM who had this attitude) .

In fairness, relieve in those days computers were archaic mainly by scientists, the military, and mathematicians. These things were colossal and cost a fortune. This awesome documentary looks at the prohibition against cannabis/hemp/marijuana in the US. The movie is smooth entirely of historical footage, and chronicles the beginning of the war against marijuana up to the point to. It shows the accurate racist beginnings of the first laws against marijuana. There’s alot of footage of Harry Anslinger’s massive propaganda campaign, which is truly comic now. The movie is quite amusing, this is because all the government propaganda against pot has been so ridiculous and exaggerated over the years (“If you smoke it, you will go INSANE and Raze people!”) . The movie shows how the public and media’s attitude changed about pot, but the government failed to answer to ever-growing legalization demands. You’re also presented the monetary figures on the war against marijuana over the years, it increases dramatically (till this very day) .

Mann picked the best parts of former films and newsreels, and musty nice collage techniques to link them together, which makes the movie very delectable to discover. Along with the astonishing soundtrack, which is mostly primitive pot songs with some wintry unusual tracks (like the opening credit music) . There are even some really icy animations, and to top it off, Woody Harrelson does a nice job of narrating.

The DVD includes a few extras, but nothing to gather very mad about. The creator of Grass, Ron Mann, has a short interview where he comes across as being very stoned. I am one of the legion of admirers who acquire that this film represents the apex of both James Whale’s directorial career and Universal Studios’ first cycle of monster movies. Cleverly scripted, flawlessly acted, wittily directed, and hauntingly scored, it’s a marvel of a movie on many levels; it works as a fear film, a satire, a murky comedy, a social commentary — even as a romantic melodrama — depending on your individual interpretation.

It’s a proper pity, then, that this rich cinematic savor has received such a disappointing transfer to the DVD format. After experiencing the sharply focused, pristine prints presented on Universal’s DVD releases of “Frankenstein” and “The Mummy”, my expectations for “Bride” were enthusiastically high. What a letdown! The film is grainy, with distractingly unpleasant inequity — the actors appear to have microcrobes running across their faces, like amoeba that you might examine under a microscope. And there were a couple of pops and jumps inherent in the source material that I don’t rob having seen on the VHS tape release of this film.

The extras are the only features that support this disc from being a complete fiasco. The poster and collected archive is powerful, and the “making of” featurette is informative and palatable. The theatrical trailer is the one veteran for the film’s Realart re-release and not the Universal unusual. I strongly suspect (and hope) there will some day be a “restored” edition of this movie available. Unless you objective can’t wait to add this title to your DVD collection, I have to regretfully dispute that until such an improved version comes along, you use your hard-earned pennies on an alternate selection.

As mentioned by many others, the film, commentary, documentary etc are all great. No need to declare. But a major flaw in the film transfer itself is the amount of information removed at the top. The tops of heads are chopped and the fair crudifix at the climax of the blind hermit scene is cropped so powerful you cannot hiss it is a unsuitable. I have compared the laser and vhs copies of this film to the dvd. The laser and vhs cut information from the bottom, a FAR better choice. I contemplate the cropping on the dvd so poor as to obtain the film almost unwatchable. I’ll be keeping my laserdisc and videotape.
